For those of a certain age you will remember the job centres of the 80's and the 90's, the DHSS, which have now become the benefits agency and the typical way vacancies were advertised in the local papers.
Job Vacancies
In the 1980s, UK Jobcentres featured bright orange signage and displayed job vacancies on index cards pinned to wall boards. They operated separately from the Department of Health and Social Security (DHSS) benefit offices, meaning jobseekers had to visit one location to look for work and a different "dole office" to sign on and claim.
Newspaper Vacancies
Newspaper advertisements were the way forward in the late 1980's and 1990's. But as time progressed things changed, you would have a number of employment bureaus and jobcentres all fighting to offer the best positions. Companies like Addeco, Blue Arrow and Reed to name but a few, but each week in the nationals and the local papers vacancies were advertised in lines of text.
